Prepare the right photo size for Etsy
Start with a high-quality source photo and enough room around the product. Etsy can show different crops of the same image, so both the file dimensions and the composition matter.
Check the published guidance
As of September 18, 2026, Etsy recommends listing images at least 2000 pixels wide and high. Its image guidance also says transparent PNG areas can appear black and suggests checking the listing thumbnail placement. See Etsy’s image requirements.
Treat a recommended size as a useful target, not a reason to enlarge a small, blurred photo. A larger file cannot recover the real details missing from the source.
Leave room for different thumbnails
Place the most important part of the product near the center and leave a margin around its outline. A long handle, tassel, or wide sleeve should still be visible if the thumbnail crops more tightly than the full listing image.
Preview the photo in Etsy’s listing tools. Check the shop grid as well as the full photo. If an edge disappears, adjust placement or make a version with more background around the subject.
Use a finished background
A transparent cutout is useful as an editing master, but flatten it onto a chosen background for the Etsy listing. White can work well for a clean lead image, while supporting photos can show the item in a real setting.
Keep the background choice consistent across a collection without making different materials look alike. A pale ceramic piece may need more careful lighting than a dark fabric item.
Prepare the export
- Select a sharp original with the full item visible.
- Correct the background and inspect the cutout if you made one.
- Set the crop while preserving enough room around the product.
- Export at dimensions supported by the original and suitable for Etsy’s guidance.
- Upload, then review the thumbnail and enlarged image.
Lightbox’s resizer and white background tools support this preparation workflow. Request TestFlight access to try them.
Troubleshoot a soft or awkward result
If the photo looks soft, compare the uploaded version with the export and the original. The issue may come from an already small source, aggressive compression, or enlargement. Retake the photo if the source does not show the detail clearly.
If the product looks cramped, add space around a cutout rather than stretching the image. Keep additional detail photos in the listing so the main image does not need to do every job.
