Make a white background look natural

A white product photo needs more than a bright background. The subject should keep its shape, light areas should retain detail, and the crop should give the item a clear place in the frame.

Choose a good source image

Photograph the whole item in soft light. Keep some contrast between the product and the source background, especially around pale materials. Leave space around handles, straps, or loose fabric.

You can start with a photographed white surface or replace the background later. A paper backdrop can work well when it curves smoothly behind the item and avoids a visible corner line.

Adjust the background separately

Increasing exposure until the wall becomes white can also erase pale details on the subject. Instead, adjust the product so its color and texture look accurate, then handle the background separately.

In Lightbox, use background removal, inspect the cutout, and choose a white canvas. If part of the product disappeared, correct the selection before continuing.

Keep white objects visible

A white product still needs a readable outline. Soft side light can reveal curves or folds without making the material look gray. Avoid heavy sharpening that creates a dark artificial edge around the item.

Check the cutout against a darker background temporarily. This makes a pale fringe or missing edge easier to see. Return to white once the selection is ready.

Decide whether a shadow belongs

A small contact shadow can make the item look grounded. Keep its direction consistent with the light on the product and avoid a dark halo all around the outline.

The destination matters. A campaign image and a marketplace main image can have different rules. For Amazon, review the Amazon photo workflow and the requirements for your category before styling the background.

Crop and export a finished image

Choose the final aspect ratio, position the item, and leave similar margins to other products in the collection. A tall bottle and a wide shoe may need different placement to look balanced.

Export a file with an actual white background when the destination needs one. Transparency is not the same as white. See PNG versus JPEG for the file-format choice.

Open the exported file at full size and again as a thumbnail. The first view exposes rough edges. The second shows whether the product remains easy to recognize. Try Lightbox on TestFlight or continue with the batch editing guide.
