Choose a size for Shopify product images

Your product grid and product page use the same photo in different spaces. Choose a consistent shape first, then export enough detail for the larger view.

Start with the published limits

As of September 18, 2026, Shopify’s product media documentation allows product images up to 5000 by 5000 pixels or 25 megapixels, with files smaller than 20 MB. It says 2048 by 2048 pixels usually works well for square product images. See Shopify’s product media types.

These are platform guidelines, not a requirement to enlarge every source photo. Use an original that already contains the detail you want shoppers to inspect.

Choose an aspect ratio for the collection

Square images are a practical starting point for many products. A portrait shape may suit long garments, while wide items can benefit from a different layout. The important step is checking how the collection looks in your chosen theme.

Match the aspect ratio of featured images that appear together. Then compare the amount of space around each product. Two square files can look inconsistent if one item fills the frame and the other sits very small in the center.

Prepare the product and background

Use a clean source photo. If you make a cutout, inspect the edges before choosing a new background. Keep material, labels, and color true to the actual item.

Lightbox’s batch editor can apply a shared starting layout. Check wide or tall products individually after the shared crop is set. A collection benefits from consistency without forcing every item into exactly the same placement.

Preview in the theme

Check the collection page, the product page, and any enlarged image view. Repeat the check on a phone. A theme can crop a photo differently in each place.

Look for clipped edges, inconsistent product scale, and a background that clashes with the page. If the theme uses a fixed crop, export a version with enough room to survive it rather than hoping the whole rectangle will remain visible.

Keep a useful export set

Save the original and the edited master. Create separate versions for the shop and any campaign graphics. Use readable filenames that help you distinguish product, angle, and version.

File size, pixel dimensions, and quality are related but not interchangeable. If a file is too large, inspect whether you can reduce dimensions or choose a more suitable format while preserving important detail.

Request Lightbox beta access, read the Shopify workflow, or compare PNG and JPEG before exporting.
