Resize a product image without stretching it
Changing the size of a file and changing the shape of its frame are different operations. Keeping that distinction clear helps you prepare a new version without distorting the product.
Choose the operation you need
| What needs to change | Use | What stays important |
|---|---|---|
| The file has too many pixels | Proportional resizing | Keep the same width-to-height relationship |
| The destination needs a different shape | Crop or add canvas | Keep the entire important part of the product visible |
| The item needs more room in the frame | Add background around a cutout | Preserve the subject’s proportions |
| The source is too small or blurred | A better source photo where possible | More pixels alone do not establish more real detail |
A square image stretched into a tall rectangle changes the product. A square image placed on a taller canvas gives you more background while leaving the product’s shape intact.
Work from the best source
Start with the original or a high-quality edited master. Avoid making each new export from the previous compressed version. Check that the details you care about are already present in the source.
If the whole item is not in the frame, resizing cannot reveal the missing parts. For a listing photo, retake the image rather than generating an unverified edge of the product.
Set the canvas, then place the product
Choose the destination shape. Position the subject and leave space for handles, straps, or loose fabric. If the picture will contain text, leave a clear area rather than placing words over fine product detail.
Use Lightbox’s image resizer with a cutout when you need a new canvas around the same subject. A template can hold the layout for the next product.
Review pixel dimensions separately
A photo can have the right shape and still be too small for a detailed view. Check the destination’s current guidance and export from a source that supports the intended size.
See the Etsy size guide and Shopify size guide for published platform guidance checked on September 18, 2026.
Inspect the final placement
Open the saved file, then preview it in the destination app. Confirm that the product has not been stretched, its important edges remain visible, and any text can be read at the display size.
For a collection, view the images together as well as individually. Consistent dimensions are a starting point. Product scale, margins, and light should work together across the set.
